Saturated Monocarboxylic Acid
Nov 12, 2018

In saturated monocarboxylic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid have strong acidity and irritation. A rancid, oily liquid containing four to nine C atoms. Those containing more than 10 C's are paraffin-like solids with low volatility and no odor.

This is due to hydrogen bonds between formic acid molecules. According to methods such as electron diffraction, due to the presence of hydrogen bonds, low-level acids exist even in the form of dimers in steam. The formic acid intermolecular hydrogen bond can be 30KJ/mol, while the ethanol intermolecular hydrogen bond is 25KJ/mol.
